Health care includes taking care of your teeth. That’s more than just cosmetic. Dental care is important for your overall health. Before 2024, most Canadians paid for dental care out of pocket or relied on private insurance. (Provinces provided free or subsidized dental care for some populations, like children and older adults.) But with the introduction of the Canadian Dental Care Plan, things are changing.
Why was dental care left out of Canada’s Medicare system?
Canada’s universal health care system (also known as Medicare) pays for Canadians to have access to physician services — this includes hospital visits, diagnostics (meaning the tests and professionals who interpret them) and visits with doctors in primary care settings or specialists. When Medicare was introduced, dental care was not included.
