P.E.I. nurses and midwives will soon be required to complete Indigenous cultural safety training aimed at improving the experiences of Indigenous patients in the province’s health-care system.

The new practice directive comes from the P.E.I. College of Nursing and Midwifery, which worked with Indigenous groups on the Island to develop the training. 

Melissa Panton, the college’s chief executive officer and registrar, said it's part of its effort to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.
